Heritage Hedge Laying at Brandwood End Cemetery

The sun shone in Brandwood End Cemetery as children from St Alban’s RC Primary school set about the daunting task of planting 250 hawthorn bushes to replace a failing beech hedge surrounding The Civilian Garden of Remembrance.

The preparation work had been undertaken by the Bio diversity Champions from Quadron Services in the previous week and they returned to help the children with their digging.  Councillor Mike Leddy, parents and members of the FBEC committee helped with the supervision of the children and this was all watched over by Dean Paul, a member of the Ground staff team for Bereavement Services, who undertook much of the work himself.

The Bio diversity Champions, led by Nicola Clarke of Quadron Services, undertake many community projects on a voluntary basis throughout the city and enjoyed working with the children in Brandwood End Cemetery.

This whole event was funded by the National Lottery through Big Lottery Fund and organised by FBEC.

Christmas Litter Pick – 4th December

For those of you who think there is very little litter around these days and so there is no need to come, it is only like that because of the continuing efforts of the ground staff and the Friends’ Litter Pick days.  We can’t let up the pressure on litter.   And it is a great way to get some fresh air and make new friends!

Children are most welcome to come and help out but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Please meet at 10am at The Lodge (we finish about 11.30). Dress appropriately for the weather and bring some gloves. Bags and pickers will be provided. We hope to see you there!

As this is our pre Xmas litter pick we may go for a swift drink following this event.  Please come and join us!

SHAPING THE FUTURE – CONSULTATION ON THE HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND’S STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK 2013-2019

From Carol Souter. Chief Executive:     We are delighted to announce the launch of our public consultation on the future of Lottery funding for heritage from 2013-2019. The consultation is open until 26 April 2011 and you can give us your views online at their online public survey.

The Government’s announcement of an increase in our share of Lottery good causes income from 16.7% to 20% by 2012-2013, amounting to around £50 million extra money a year, was an extremely welcome boost for the UK’s heritage. From 2013 to 2019 we will have an annual awards budget of around £300 million.

At the same time, reductions in central Government and local authority spending mean there will be significantly less public investment in heritage across the UK during the next four years.

This consultation therefore comes at a time of continued turbulence and change for many of our customers and partners. Your views are important to us and will help us decide how we can best respond.

We have set out our proposals on a range of issues, based on analysis of the emerging funding environment for heritage in the next few years, research and evaluation of the impact of our funding, and discussions with many other organisations, partners and funders. This is your opportunity to tell us:

  •
    • what we should continue doing;
    • what we may need to do differently;
    • and what new initiatives or measures could have the greatest impact.

Please register and respond at http://www.hlf.org.uk/consultation2011

by 26 April. We will report back on what you have told us later on this year and expect to publish our strategic framework for 2013-2019 in spring 2012.

We look forward to hearing from you.   A BIG thank you from Heritage Lottery Fund and from the Friends!
