Alistair McGowan becomes Patron of Friends of Brandwood End Cemetery

Multi-faceted, an acute environmentalist, a rich heritage spanning many centuries and a thorough gentleman; Alistair represents all this and much more. He has now, we are extremely happy and proud to say, agreed to be the fourth Patron of the Friends of Brandwood End Cemetery (FBEC).

Amongst Alistair’s lineage, there are thirty plus family linked members interred at Brandwood End Cemetery and this together with the 1700 plus ‘Brandwood End’ trees and Alistair’s existing patronage with ‘Trees for Cities’, provides an ideal backdrop to Alistair’s new FBEC patronage.

Looking for wildlife?

Since we posted sightings of muntjac deer, bats and other wildlife there have been several visitors coming along to find these lovely animals.  Please note that the Cemetery is there for people to pay their respects to those that have passed on, and to enjoy some quiet moments reflection.  The Cemetery is ideal, because it is so quiet, for wildlife to enjoy the natural environment BUT they are not there our pleasure.  Please do not ask the staff where they can be found; even if they knew, most creatures only come out at night when the Cemetery is closed and the people have gone home.  Please respect the Cemetery, it’s wildlife inhabitants, the staff and other visitors.  Many thanks.

Are you after information on lost graves?

The ground staff at Brandwood End Cemetery are constantly being asked to help people find graves – much as they would like to help they really can’t.  They don’t have the information.  Since the Lodge was flooded some months ago the office for Brandwood End Cemetery has moved to Kings Norton.  But here is some information which may help >>

Or if you want to contact the Office there details can be found here >>

The Community comes together at Brandwood End Cemetery

Heritage Hedge Laying at Brandwood End Cemetery

The sun shone in Brandwood End Cemetery as children from St Alban’s RC Primary school set about the daunting task of planting 250 hawthorn bushes to replace a failing beech hedge surrounding The Civilian Garden of Remembrance.

The preparation work had been undertaken by the Bio diversity Champions from Quadron Services in the previous week and they returned to help the children with their digging.  Councillor Mike Leddy, parents and members of the FBEC committee helped with the supervision of the children and this was all watched over by Dean Paul, a member of the Ground staff team for Bereavement Services, who undertook much of the work himself.

The Bio diversity Champions, led by Nicola Clarke of Quadron Services, undertake many community projects on a voluntary basis throughout the city and enjoyed working with the children in Brandwood End Cemetery.

This whole event was funded by the National Lottery through Big Lottery Fund and organised by FBEC.

Christmas Litter Pick – 4th December

For those of you who think there is very little litter around these days and so there is no need to come, it is only like that because of the continuing efforts of the ground staff and the Friends’ Litter Pick days.  We can’t let up the pressure on litter.   And it is a great way to get some fresh air and make new friends!

Children are most welcome to come and help out but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Please meet at 10am at The Lodge (we finish about 11.30). Dress appropriately for the weather and bring some gloves. Bags and pickers will be provided. We hope to see you there!

As this is our pre Xmas litter pick we may go for a swift drink following this event.  Please come and join us!
